Tech tree needs small circuit boards to be added. These are crucial to early development, and there is no way to obtain them short of scavenging, which yields very few, since they seem to be scarce. What could be a fun way to do it is the tech tree gives you the basic printed board, and then you have to assemble the rest of the board at the workbench using the materials there.
