Using the grinder on small things like gas cylinders is painfull. I would suggest making the item that you want the grider to taget highlight. This would relieve some of the issue. I feel i spend too much time grinding areas i can't grind early game becase i have no way to aim. if there is a way for this to happen already in game i have not found it, i would suggest having that mode set to default and an option in settings to remove it. I dont think that this request reduses emersion as i'm pretty sure if i wanted to grind a cylinder i would, rather than waist time grinding the floor.
