One thing that keeps bothering me is how, in the chain of food production, the number of slots in each step of the chain is so consistently inconsistent:
(1) The "starter tier" Workshop equipment has 20 slots in the incubator, but we'll only ever use 12 of those because the level 2 plant rack has only 12 slots. Yet the small seedling tray that goes along with it has 8 slots, not 12 as one might expect. Might as well have just 6 slots, because we'll need to do two trips to move a full (by plant rack standards) batch of plants.
Okay, that's the starter equipment, so it might be forgiven for not being optimal.
The "pro level" Greenhouse equipment is even worse though:
- The planting racks now have 24 slots, but we'll only ever use 20 of those because that's still the limit of the incubators.
- For tier 3 plants, we're even limited to 18 slots due to the Greenhouse floor space capacity.
- For tier 4 plants, we're limited even further to 16 slots due to the size of the dome, if we're using the medium dome.
- The large dome's areas fit 20 plants, which matches the incubators' size, hooray! But alas! We have bottlenecks in between, so again we'll never be using all the slots.
- Don't get me started on the large planting tray: 19 Slots? Seriously? You couldn't fit the display anywhere else, so that we might be able to carry a full incubator's worth of seedlings? Then at least make it 18 to fit the Greenhouse floor spaces. Anything that is consistent with anything at all.
The whole thing is just ridiculous. You'd think that a company designing stuff for a Mars colony would design things to make the process of growing plants more efficient.
